The Greatest Non Hits

My Morning Jacket: Evil Urges

Chris & Tim
SPEAKER_05:

Alright, thank you for listening to the Greatest Not Hits. I'm Chris, and playing the uh second track on the Evil Urges album from My Morning Jacket. I'm going to scream part one. Is my co-host Tim. Um yeah, we're gonna be listening to Evil Urges by Morning Jacket, the fifth studio album from the band. It was released by ATO Records on June 10th of 2008. I found it interesting that it was runner-up for the best alternative music album uh for the Grammys. Um I ended up losing Radio Heads in Rainbows that year, but uh just to know that it was nominated for that is pretty uh I I didn't know that coming in, so I just read that from Wikipedia. Anyway, it's a good album. And we're gonna listen to all the songs, and at the end we're gonna rank them. Rank the top three non-hits, as we always do. And the the song that Tim's playing, uh Touch Me, I'm going to scream. But the second part of it, and I this is part one that he's playing. But part two comes at the end of the album, and it was actually released as a single, and then the song I'm Amazed was also uh a single as well. So I mean we could probably leave those out. We'll we'll play we'll play fast and loose with it. But nevertheless, we're gonna at the end we're gonna rank our top three non-hits, the ones that we uh we like the best. And there are a bunch of them. There are 14 tracks. Um The Bank is is is from Louisville. This uh lead singer is Jim James. Uh you heard uh Stan from Family Guy praise him. It was they they did a whole episode, My Morning Strait Jacket, and uh it was the name of that episode back in 2009. So anyway. Uh the whole episode was dedicated to the band, and uh he's completely enthralled by Jim James' voice, who's a co-founder. And uh on this album they kind of did like a shift change in uh members of the band. Um I think it's uh Jim James Vocals, uh Tom Blank and Shift Face, Patrick Hallahan, drums and percussion, Carl Romel, Ramel. I don't know. Guitar vocals and Vogaster, I believe. Or Vogaster, Vogaster. But anyway, um there were some other people running uh involved Joe Chicarelli, who was the producer, and then there's some other mixers, etc. Assistants and we don't really need to name all of them. But um This is this album, this band is known for you know, you can't put them in a box, you know, they planned a bunch of different things together. On this album, I think they wanted it to have more of an urban feel. Like there's the song Librarian kind of sounds like Fleet Fox's, you know, where this is really like bulky. But then you've got other songs like highly suspicious that has it's kind of rock, but it's also kind of street for lack of a better term. Anyway, these are really good songs, uh great album. And uh we're excited to to listen to all of it. Um wonder what else I can uh I mean there's there's there's a lot uh to this band. Tennessee Fire is their first album in 1999, and just recently in this year, 2025 when we were recording this, and early a few months ago, uh they released the the the album is, and so they're still active, so they've had a long career. It just seems like yesterday was in 1999, for me at least a bunch of years, and uh they're still going strong after this album. Before this album was the album, which was their the rake out album because it was good.

SPEAKER_02:

Like a video game. Are they evil or are they good? I don't know. Are they the margarine?

SPEAKER_10:

You're the gallery coke of ebour. Just one gallery.

SPEAKER_02:

But it's then it's not a scale of of good and bad, it's more complex. Okay. And if there's religion, it's technical.

SPEAKER_05:

Yeah. I don't know. Yeah, they do have there are a lot of different subjects like uh religion and relationships, all that stuff, you know. I'm getting uh getting crazy.

SPEAKER_12:

Should I should I I can pull it back a little if you can easy chance, yeah.

SPEAKER_05:

Maybe see the next couple plays.

SPEAKER_02:

It's a great album. It's just really it's got me jacked up. Alright. It's uh it's it's a happy album, I think.

SPEAKER_05:

Even though it's evil urges, yeah. It's it's happy for evil urges, right? I mean let's get into it. The very first song is called Evil Urges, so away we go. Ready? Okay. The drums, it's that guitar eater name.

SPEAKER_02:

Saucy, saucy effects.

SPEAKER_05:

So this is kind of like Prince, I wanna say, like, trying to weave Prince into some other stuff here.

SPEAKER_06:

Nasty.

SPEAKER_02:

Whenever. Oh man.

SPEAKER_10:

You're quadriper. You're semi-fever.

SPEAKER_06:

Oh I wrote it. Okay. Steve.

SPEAKER_02:

Yeah. Tired of waiting now.

SPEAKER_17:

My feelings are hurt.

SPEAKER_03:

I think that is social subdivisions, okay.

SPEAKER_02:

Bring it all in. Bring it all in.

SPEAKER_05:

Strings going on. Wow. Yeah, very good. Yep. I think like I was reading somewhere that they were gonna for this tour. Just do all the parts without having any backup billing recording with the exception of strings.

SPEAKER_02:

But there's a lot going on. Jim James is a perfectionist. He probably wanted those spring players to take another go at it, you know. I probably like my fingers. I want the their yard duty.

SPEAKER_05:

This is called this is a good it's a good turn. Zeppeliness.

SPEAKER_14:

Come in to find out all about a roll eagle plant.

SPEAKER_02:

Yeah. Now an extra extra octave. Okay. Somebody's gotta stop that Dr. Evil guy. I know. Gosh. I agree. Maybe good and bad. It's all the same. Deeper, deeper way down here. You need the the light to have the dark kind of thing. Uh uh. Part of the human way. But it hurts people to be Yeah, well.

SPEAKER_11:

You're hurt, you're hurt real fucking bad. If you ain't dying!

SPEAKER_02:

Yeah, some bank robbers out there. That's right.

SPEAKER_09:

Uh voice my aspirations for word domination.

unknown:

Yeah.

SPEAKER_05:

Well, that song was like all about hanky tanky, you know. Yeah. Dominatrix stuff. That's right.

SPEAKER_02:

Hanky tanky.

SPEAKER_05:

Yeah. That was all. Okay, so here's Touch Me and Scream. Part one.

SPEAKER_04:

I feel I feel bad.

SPEAKER_02:

A great base.

SPEAKER_06:

But it makes a lot of sense.

SPEAKER_02:

Nice barbershop rag out there. I love this one.

SPEAKER_05:

Dig a hole under the fence. What? Dig a hole under the fence.

SPEAKER_09:

I have one simple request, and that is to have sharks with frickin' laser beams that not shoot their heads.

SPEAKER_02:

Also hanky panky, but a sort of push and pull hanky panky. I don't know. They're like smiling, weird smiling foreplay. Yeah. Just across the village, across the town square for months. Flushy union.

SPEAKER_06:

When you are pleased, you see yourself in me.

SPEAKER_14:

Time to get creeped on.

SPEAKER_05:

Shout out to Happy Fun Ball. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02:

Still legal. 16 states. Could be less now.

SPEAKER_05:

Who knows? Well, or more, I don't know. It's pending on what you call happy fun ball.

SPEAKER_06:

How many nights can soul so full of life remain untouched?

SPEAKER_02:

How many nights can a soul so full of life remain untouched?

SPEAKER_06:

How can a soul nights?

SPEAKER_05:

Soul so full of life remain untouched.

SPEAKER_06:

Just water, don't touch it.

SPEAKER_04:

I was just pointing at anybody. Well don't point up. It can't be tied. Yeah, but I'm looking up.

SPEAKER_02:

I need a human right by my side. Untied, what? Untied. I assume they're untied. Yeah. Yeah, that should go without saying. Untied this time. That kind of like insinuates a weird event, you know. Literally figurative.

SPEAKER_12:

A touch of frost.

SPEAKER_05:

A touch of frost here. Touch a frost.

SPEAKER_02:

Oh, the the keys went right from his voice. That's crazy. Yeah, that was kind of cool.

SPEAKER_07:

That was been a while since we screamed something, maybe we should.

SPEAKER_02:

Good bass work. Bassist was late for the the uh practice for this one. Yeah.

SPEAKER_06:

Oh wait just a minute!

SPEAKER_02:

I'm coming!

SPEAKER_05:

Alright. Okay, so this is a third song. This is highly suspicious. It's tricky that very beginning. Oh, totally. Prince. The Prince voice.

SPEAKER_11:

Hey, you wanna get high, man?

SPEAKER_02:

No.

SPEAKER_06:

This one's the song.

SPEAKER_02:

It's like a video game. Literally, is what James Jim James says. Oh, the song? Yeah. Why is it a video game? Like if you were playing Mario Kart or something to Oh, you mean the the music in the background? It actually says.

SPEAKER_15:

Oh my kids trick or two rock around two rock.

SPEAKER_02:

It's a goofy one. Supposed to sound like angry police officers. Okay. Highly suspicious, knocking down your door. I'm the main character. Paranoid drug addict that the police are coming to get. Cool. Yeah.

SPEAKER_05:

I like this. Okay, whoa. That's a highly suspicious. A Seinfeld episode. Divided. A door.

SPEAKER_11:

A George divided against itself! There you go. What about a topic? That's the perfect cover.

SPEAKER_02:

I like to see. This is getting out of control now. Okay, whoa.

SPEAKER_13:

Whoa, happy heck guys.

SPEAKER_17:

I'm telling you something's going on.

SPEAKER_12:

I'm telling you something is going on.

SPEAKER_05:

All right. That was fun. All right, the next song this is I'm amazed. Tim's cracking.

SPEAKER_02:

You love that. That's great. Top notch. Bring it down, bring it down here. Back up. Everybody hold hands.

SPEAKER_06:

I'm a major quiet option. I'm a major ocean. I'm a major with the people saying. I'm a major battery.

SPEAKER_05:

Yeah, Spotify this uh thing has a second most second highest number of players. Sweet emotion Raga. Sweet emotion.

SPEAKER_02:

Raga? Yeah. Emotionally sweet Raga. It's campfire. It's a campfire ballad. Okay. It's genre hopping. Really.

SPEAKER_06:

I will make the lack of evolution. I'm the lack of place. I will make the rejecting. I will made the weak seven place.

SPEAKER_11:

Divided against itself! Cannot stand.

SPEAKER_12:

I can pull it back a little if you like.

SPEAKER_13:

Okay, whoa. Whoa, hey, hey guys. Whoa.

SPEAKER_14:

Wow. Amazing.

SPEAKER_05:

That was an amazing song. Nice sweet ending.

SPEAKER_16:

All right. Excellent.

SPEAKER_05:

This is an excellent thank you too. Exclamation.

SPEAKER_04:

We're taking it down there, aren't you?

SPEAKER_02:

String's really rounded out. That's good.

SPEAKER_01:

We didn't think it's gonna make it.

SPEAKER_04:

That was nice.

SPEAKER_01:

We didn't think it's gonna make it this way.

SPEAKER_04:

I don't know. Okay. It's kinda like some spot on for her next. Okay.

SPEAKER_06:

SPEAKER_06:

Uh you really brought out the naked part. I don't know what you would do. I know I just want to thank you.

SPEAKER_11:

Don't you wish you were flawless like me? Towering inferno of physical perfection.

SPEAKER_02:

Definitely. Thank you, bender.

SPEAKER_06:

And walked on down the hall. You can even say music the way it came to.

SPEAKER_17:

Don't give him a San Diego, thank you.

unknown:

You do that.

SPEAKER_02:

I don't even know what that is. I don't know. I don't want to know. Yeah, yeah, we don't know. I don't want to talk about it with you. It's not me. I have to call the fire department. Yeah. Something.

SPEAKER_05:

His voice is like butter.

SPEAKER_02:

It's like Anya.

SPEAKER_17:

It's better than Anya. Barbara No.

SPEAKER_03:

Makes a sound like a Russian couple arguing in a bowling alley.

SPEAKER_02:

Oh gosh. What do they get off composing a song like this?

SPEAKER_07:

SPEAKER_05:

Yeah. Oh, it hit. Yeah. I was missing for me. I I don't know why.

SPEAKER_02:

I think the little end strings and the band going.

SPEAKER_05:

SPEAKER_02:

I mean it was serviceable. We're walking. We're walking down the hall. Walking. But shabby.

SPEAKER_05:

The song is called Sec Walking.

SPEAKER_02:

Walked on down.

SPEAKER_06:

Red light. Green life. Could I use a little more cowbell for that? Yeah, I am walking.

SPEAKER_12:

SPEAKER_14:

Not too much though. I'm telling you, fellas.

SPEAKER_11:

SPEAKER_02:

Shout out to the runners, too. Comes, lines come, melodies come, simple lines intertwining. That's right. A lot of the songs on evil urges came from those walks.

SPEAKER_06:

SPEAKER_05:

Well, none of them are, are they? Oh, Radiohead's kind of Grammy-ish. Are they a Grammy? Are they Grammy people? No, they don't care about the Grammy. Nah.

SPEAKER_02:

SPEAKER_05:

I like how they're pulling it back a little right now. They pulled it back by not too much.

SPEAKER_02:

It's just a constant like a little roller coaster of a song here. And back to the little.

SPEAKER_05:

It's like no quarter from Let's Apple. Are they gonna have like another ride back up before they go back down? We're just chilling. From here on out. So we can get into the top three right now if you want to ride it out. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02:

I feel like I feel like Amazed shouldn't be on there.

SPEAKER_02:

SPEAKER_05:

Well, what else would be a hit?

SPEAKER_02:

I I've definitely heard Evil Urges on the radio. Alright, let's take out Evil Urges then.

Yeah, it's it's a rockin' song. It was a sleeper down there. I'll have to revisit it again, even and just to to know how to even describe it. Okay. Because the bangers and the the sort of whispers all kind of blurred together. Not gonna lie. Okay.

SPEAKER_05:

I'm gonna say number two for me is touch me, I'm gonna scream part one. Okay. Yeah. I thought that was it was uh it was very melodic and touch me kind of screamed. Yeah. I like the Stan Smith was on to something there. I thought it was kind of trippy and kind of cool and kind of soothing. Catchy. That's my number three.

SPEAKER_02:

Okay. Maybe thank you too is my number two. Alright. Wow. Well No, I'm gonna scratch that. I'm going highly suspicious is number two. Okay.

SPEAKER_16:

It's just got a great concept.

SPEAKER_02:

Okay. I mean Am I always the the hard rock like like metal like slapping like craziness. Maybe not, but it it it's a good song. It's cartoony. Yeah. And for that uh it's in there.

SPEAKER_05:

It is. Uh my number two is gonna be aluminum park.

SPEAKER_02:

Oh wow.

SPEAKER_05:

Yeah, it was uh Okay. Yeah. I just thought it had uh it it transitioned well from like the the chorus part, it had and then into da da da da da da da da da da da da. Alright. And come on, it's a big big it was just kind of catchy to me, so I like that.

SPEAKER_16:

Getting smaller, this world. Yeah, I tell ya. Shout out to our international listeners, cake us up. Alright.

SPEAKER_02:

So I guess my number my number one's gotta be touch me, I'm going to scream part one. I mean, that's I learned it on guitar. Yeah, you were you're angling for that. That was the hint. It had such a a loop-de-loop of a like the E major round suspended with uh open chords. It was quite quite good, quite nice, yes. Very good. Yes, I I agree.

SPEAKER_05:

Well, i remnants was a really good song, but I I took that out. I'm I'm going with Highly Suspicious. Yes, my number one. Wow. I like that. Boom, ch boom, boom, ch boom, boom, chomp.

Yeah, I think I think our our picks were solid. Yes. There's a lot of other ones. Librarian could have been in there. That was you very unique. Yeah. It wasn't uh it wasn't bad. There was a lot of good songs on here. I just for my taste, my favorites are those. I just get into them, they stick in my head.

SPEAKER_02:
