Speaker 1:

I think live music is something that if you do it right, it's really hard to get sick of it, so you can entertain that many people. I'm a little amazed that so many people are coming to it.

Speaker 2:

Yes, All right, thank you for listening to the Greatest Non-Hits. I'm Chris and playing what I'll call a mashup of the song Hook and Paco Bell's Canon. In D is my co-host, tim, and we want to thank you for listening to our podcast, the Greatest Non-Hits. Today is going to be an album for the ages, blues Traveler's fourth album, titled Four, which was released in 1994. So big, huge breakout album for this band. It peaked at number eight on the Billboard 200 albums chart and it's known for Runaround and this song, hook, which charted at number eight and number 23, respectively. So it's according to Wikipedia. So let's talk about the lineup. Now for the band they're still current and active. They're out there. Now for the band they're still current and active, they're out there.

Speaker 2:

The current members are John Popper, chan Chinchilla, brandon Hill or Brendan Hill sorry, tad Chinla and Ben Wilson. I think Ben Wilson's keyboard, tad Chinchilla's bass he's the brother, younger brother, of the guitar player, chan Chinchilla, brendan Hill is percussion and John Popper is vocals and harmonica. So that's where they get their distinct sound, because they're bluesy, they're rock, they're folk, they're alternative, they're a jam band, they're kind of southern rock and they're sort of in that space. I can go on and on. They've got all kinds of credentials. I think this album went 6X platinum Favorite band of David Letterman. I didn't realize that. I think I read somewhere that they're also the band that's played the most on Late Night with David Letterman of all time.

Speaker 2:

Maybe I'm wrong, I don't know, tim can weigh in on that, but nevertheless their origins early, like mid-80s. I guess they had met in their hometown of Princeton, new Jersey and added players on the way On this album.

Speaker 2:

at the time, 1994, it was Brendan Hill on percussion. At the time 1994, it was Brendan Hill on percussions, chan on guitar, john Popper vocals harmonica and then Bobby Sheehan was the bass player. He also did backing vocals on Brother John as well. Nevertheless, he tragically passed away in 1999, and that was sort of an inflection point. They kind of changed directions. They ended up bringing in Tad Chan's younger brother, but nevertheless most of the band has been intact for quite a long time. So despite the tragedy with Sheehan, bobby Sheehan they've been able to survive. There's Popper's obesity, struggling with weight problems, but they're still at it, still doing good. The very beginning was an interview, like a rare 90s interview, with John Popper and Chan sitting next to him.

Speaker 2:

Anyway, we're going to do what we always do. We're going to listen to the album, we're going to yuck it up a lot, we've got hilarious sound clips, tim's going to join us and we're going to have him weigh in on things. But after we start listening to everything, we'll rank the top three non-hits at the end and then we'll call it a wrap from there. But, with that being said, probably there are two singles. There's Runaround, which is the song that really broke for them, and then the song Hook that Tim played, played. He's doing Pachelbel Now he's going back into hook. So anyway, uh, but yeah, those are the. Give me the two hits, and so I think everything else is a non hit. There's a song called the mountain winds again, or mountains win again, which was, uh, on a bush like commercial that you probably heard, or maybe you remember or not it doesn't matter, but anyway that's kind of in there.

Speaker 2:

I I wouldn't call it a hit only just because it's in the background of a commercial, but uh, nevertheless, uh, we'll throw that in there. I don't know if it's gonna go anywhere, probably not with me, but nevertheless that's what we're gonna do today. We're happy to bring along with us. So there are some additional musicians on here. Um, there's adam brody at backing vocals. Warren haynes to slide guitar on the mountains win again. Uh, basheri johnson does some percussions. Chuck lavelle, piano keyboards. That guy's a legend. I learned something every time I do these podcasts. Paul schaefer did keyboards on stand, okay. Uh, pete kovacevic, sitar and tambura. I hope I pronounce his name right. Uh, john O Manson, vocals on Brother John. All right. Steve Thompson production Okay, most of these songs are written by John Popper doing collaboration with Chan.

Speaker 2:

I don't know, we can get into that later. Let's go back to the history of the formation. It was, I think John Popper and Brendan Hill formed a band called the Establishment Hill's brother was on bass and a rotating roster of guitarists. Okay, they did some cassettes. They did covers of Gloria and Battle Hymn of the Republic. That's weird. Chan was a football player and a guitarist, promising athlete committed to music instead of uh, I guess he had knee injury, so no more football for him. Uh popper met bassist bobby, uh, bobby sheehan. They became friends and he joined as the new bass player for Blues Band, I guess in 1987. And I guess they did Okay.

Speaker 2:

So the album cover has a cat on it and I guess those four Chan Popper, sheehan and Drummer did some jam sessions. They later called it the Black Cat Jam and that spawned core grooves for their first album. So a black cat also happened to be nearby. So they took it as a sign and adopted the black cat as their mascot figure, which four years later, is on the album cover of this. So there's like a cat with sunglasses, there's Blues Traveler with sunglasses, there's blues traveler, etc. So anyway, we're uh, yeah, we're. So we're seven minutes in and uh, we're gonna, but tim's gonna wrap it up. We're gonna again, you know. Thank you for listening and, uh, thanks for having us being a part of the greatest non-hits family, the G&H family, and, without further ado, we've got our buddy Tim weighing in.

Speaker 7:

Tim, how you doing man Riding road Broncos, here we go.

Speaker 2:

Speaker 2:

It's very beautiful. It's just subtle lines intertwining. Subtle and I try to finally decide why these guys are like from New Jersey. They can pull off singing blues despite the northern accent.

Speaker 8:

And if you can't already tell, I am unable to let things go, just acknowledge all that shit is bullshit it is a song.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, it's hard to play on acoustic. Yeah, it's hard to play on acoustic. He does a really good fluttery strum pattern with the muting he mutes it hammer-on, mute-hammer-on kind of thing yeah. The chords and the progressions.

Fear and love. Fear is a negative voice for her. And then she kept going free and last, and with just a tiny scar and finally on her own. No one knows what became of her. Oh, we know she got away and, though there really ain't no guarantees down here, a lot of things she did okay. Oh, why does she feel? Oh, what would she Feel so free, with her heart on her sleeve?

Speaker 2:

She's supposed to be a doctor again.

Speaker 7:

There's a lot of Peter Pan stuff in this one. Oh yes, Affirmative, Dave.

Speaker 8:

I read you it doesn't matter what I say. Affirmative, Dave. I read you. That's inflection for you. So in a truth of best reflection, but I've said nothing so far. And I can keep it up for as long as it takes, and it don't matter who you are. If I'm doing my job, it's yours.

Speaker 2:

All that breaks Because the hook brings you back the part in the song that everybody likes, right?

Speaker 8:

I ain't telling you no lies.

Speaker 7:

Yeah, it's not that deep, it's just a good, well-written song Based on Pachelbel's. Not that deep, it's just a good, well-written song Based on Pachelbel's Canon in D Pretty much identically.

Speaker 1:

It's very learned.

Speaker 4:

Oh, Papa Homer, you are so learned.

Speaker 8:

Learned son.

Speaker 2:

It's butter peanut. Peter Pan peanut butter commercial 1972.

Speaker 4:

Speaker 2:

That was like sandwich. Absolutely, Of the two hits which you did yeah, suck like a fuck, Suck it in, suck it in, suck it in. If you're in to dinner in Berlin, Make it a sprint and move it, or else you'll win and then begin to see what you're made of. Come on, come on, suck me baby.

Speaker 8:

Come on, come on, Come on come on now, suck me bitch oh. Maybe if he wasn't in the friend zone all the time Spending all these bills. Diddies Gibby, diddy's Gibby.

Speaker 7:

Speaker 2:

You know it's slang, Shout out to.

Speaker 7:

Speaker 2:

See what the guitar and harmonica are doing, doing a good one. Devil went down to Georgia.

Speaker 10:

Speaker 7:

It's got like a Moby Dick kind of thing going on. Okay, bud Zeppelin? Yeah, yeah, down, down, down. It's like a duel back and forth. Okay, bud Zeppelin? Yeah, yep, down, down, down.

Speaker 2:

Down down, down, down, down, down, down, down, down, down, down, down, down, down, down, down, down, down, down, down, down, down, down, down, down, down, down, down, down, down, down, down down down, down this one's called just wait thank you, brad hamilton, that is.

If ever you are feeling like you're tired and know you're up to a struggle, if you're headed downhill, if you realize your wildest dreams can hurt you and your appetite for pain Is drinking its fill. I ask of you a very simple question.

Speaker 2:

This is more of a touchy-feely album than I realized, but you are alone touchy-feely album that I realized.

Speaker 8:

Yeah, you are alone, and is your suffering a privilege you share only? Or did you think that everybody else Feels completely at home? Just wait, just wait, just wait, deeper and deeper, just wait, it will come. If you think I'm giving up on you, you're crazy. If you think I don't love you, well then you're just wrong. In time, you just might take the feeling better. Time's a beauty, the road being long. I know that now you feel no consolation, but maybe if I told you and informed you out loud, I'd say this without fear of hesitation. I can honestly tell you that you make me proud. You gotta go. Just go, just wait, just wait, just wait. You will come. Just wait, just wait, just wait, and he will come.

Speaker 6:

I'm just a kid.

Speaker 5:

I fell in some ice and later got caught up.

Speaker 6:

I'm just some little scientist and it's coming on.

Speaker 10:

Oh, where's Mr Hood? It's very hot today.

Speaker 2:

It was dead by my beginning with EVP and that was gold.

Speaker 6:

Just passed.

Speaker 7:

Shout out to Milton Chan is crushing it, oh yeah.

Speaker 9:

What a freak it just got too hard.

Speaker 2:

What a freak Ha ha ha, If this is Chuck LaGalpa the anointing is beautiful.

Speaker 9:

Like love and hope and trust and confidence.

Speaker 7:

Thank you, nancy. Good things come to those that wait. Right, that's right. It's like a tortoise in the air. Yeah, we were talking about that Trajectory of 90s bands, right.

Speaker 2:

It takes spin doctors, blues travelers and fish. Those blues travelers came out like a bang, but then they were overtaken by these guys Right, and then fish came along, and then their trajectory much, much, much longer.

Speaker 7:

Yeah, because they didn't peak ever really.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, they built it organically over time and just got bigger and bigger and bigger, kind of a. Thing.

Speaker 7:

Yeah, they didn't have many hits on their radio. None Yo radio huh.

Speaker 8:

Here's Johnny.

Speaker 10:

Want you to hold on to God's unchanging hand. God, help Joshua fight the battle of Jericho. Yes, help Daniel get out the lion's den. Help Jericho get off the island.

Speaker 2:

It's a nice build-up.

Speaker 8:

You'll make me come back for you. Oh, I got my name. Are you sleeping, brother John? If you feel like weeping, brother John, brothers, don't shake hands, brothers, gotta fun. Brother John. Brothers, don't shake hands, Brothers, gotta fun.

Speaker 2:

Speaker 9:

Fucking touch my drum set because I know props doesn't touch the floor. Twice right.

Speaker 8:

Let's just watch it now. What the hell is he talking about? I have no idea. There's a lot of lyrics on this song he just repeats the same thing over and over. Oh wait, just a minute, me for the joy. I just wait and see. I'll wait just a minute what will make me come back for? Anyhow, if you think that I'm going to sit around and wait for you. You can forget it.

Speaker 2:

This is sort of like the lick-my-love pump of harmonica solos Very delicate.

Speaker 7:

Fine line, fine line, yeah. Between clever and stupid, fine line, yeah.

Speaker 8:

Between clever and stupid Brothers don't shake hands.

Speaker 7:

I think live music. Wow, my dad would tell me about this story, about how he would tell his parents he was going to Brother John or Brother Joe or whatever it was, to do some Church group or whatever, and really they would just Drink beer and get high and the upperclassmen known as Brother John oh okay, interesting, yeah, yeah, we talked about that earlier. He held a bit of that reverend. He was, you know, older. This is how you gotta b buy a beer. You know, this is how you got to talk to women.

Speaker 2:

I hope that's all they have. I hope there's more.

Speaker 4:

I don't know, I just can't ask him.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, shout out to the Spotlight fans out there. Is it Spotlight or Cass, that movie about? You know all that the Catholic Church and whatnot you fucking crazy man.

Speaker 7:

No, it was a simpler time back then, god.

Speaker 5:

Speaker 10:

Out of my face. I'm in a roundhouse right now.

Speaker 8:

Okay, We'll try. Really matter brother.

Speaker 7:

Hey, you ain't Peter Pan, you're just a man, peter.

Speaker 8:

Pan.

Speaker 4:

And I bring the peanut eater's butter. Peanut Nice, he's weird, john.

Speaker 8:

A primitive day Are you crying.

Speaker 7:

Good drum work here, solid.

Speaker 4:

Peter Pan is the peanut butter eater's peanut butter. I said that right, didn't I?

Speaker 7:

You said it right, peter Pan. You're telling Peter Pan from 1974. Crashing out of the window. Now get a real job, yeah.

Speaker 8:

Just like falls out of the kitchen can.

Speaker 7:

Oh, a little call and response. Here it's like a church choir.

Speaker 8:

I don't feel too bad, all right, well isn ride that sun, won't you ride that sun? Won't you wait and see?

Speaker 6:

All right.

Speaker 4:

Well, isn't that special.

Speaker 2:

All right, nice way to end it there. I like that. There you go All right, good stuff.

Speaker 6:

That was good stuff All right Great album.

Speaker 2:

Good look, good drummer.

Speaker 7:

Good drummer.

Speaker 2:

So what are we thinking? My first drummer. So Tim your top three man.

Speaker 7:

I, almost spontaneously, can bust it over this album and I'm going to go crash and burn with that said.

Speaker 2:

Okay, yeah.

Speaker 7:

Crash and burn.

Speaker 2:

Solid bop. One of us has to go. I mean with one of the ballads.

Speaker 7:

I mean we don't has to go.

Speaker 2:

I mean With one of the ballads. I mean we don't have to, but no, we don't yeah.

Speaker 7:

The ballads were strong, I would say they were.

Speaker 2:

They just the jamming did it for me and I was going to say maybe Fallible is my number three.

Speaker 7:

Okay.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, I just thought I had a.

Speaker 7:

I'm going done and dusted. Number two stand. You know I got my little. You know, standing desk, a little attachment, you know. Shout to the sitters, but extra loud, shout out to the standards Okay.

Speaker 2:

Okay, yeah, I like the way that song, the, the tempo changed in a cool way. That was good stuff. I'm going to go Crash and Burn my number two.

Speaker 7:

Nice.

Speaker 2:

The musicality in there was just really really way, way up there.

Speaker 7:

Way deep. Yeah, you got to get in a fight, you got to fight for your rights and you got to be free. You gotta, you gotta, get in the fight and you gotta fight for your rights and you gotta, you gotta be free, so I'm going freedom. Number one, this one Great song. It had everything. Yeah, a little slow down, uh had the vigor, had the uh. Very upfront with the jam, a shout out to brother John as my honorable mention. And then the ballads, strong ballads. Price to Pay Just Wait, look Around.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, those were good.

Speaker 7:

But it's just the jamming was the jamming songs.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, the energy was there, you could feel it, it was palpable, my number one I'm going to say Brother John, oh nice, that used to. Energy was there, you could feel it, it was palpable. My number one.

Speaker 4:

I'm going to say Brother.

Speaker 2:

John.

Speaker 7:

Oh nice, that used to be in there, okay.

Speaker 2:

It was just. It was super, super, duper jammy, and it was a good way to end the album on a high note. I think it's good, when you have your best song, be the last song, because it makes you know it ends on a high note. You should always end a performance of anything on the highest of high notes. Yeah, it's a circle.

Speaker 7:

Strong song in the beginning, strong song in the end. It goes round and round, exactly.

Speaker 6:

Round and round.

Speaker 7:

Okay, all right, puts a bow. Yeah, it puts a bow on it, on the roundness of it.

Speaker 2:

Yep, exactly Four divisible by two, it's a round number, right it's a round number, right, yeah, round numbers, uh, yeah, all right, all right, thank you for listening. Yeah, that's it that's how it's all gone. All right, rock on, take care.
