The Greatest Non Hits

Tool: Undertow

β€’ Chris & Tim β€’ Season 3 β€’ Episode 25
Speaker 1:

Does everybody know?

Speaker 2:

what time it is Toll time.

Speaker 3:

All right. Thank you for listening to the Greatest Nine.

Speaker 1:

Hits.

Speaker 3:

I'm Chris, and playing Sober from the Undertow album from Tool is my co-host, tim. We want to thank you for listening, and this is Tool's debut studio album. They had an EP that came out prior to this, called Opiate. This is their commercial success that launches their career to great heights Great Heights, released back in April 6th of 1993, which is considered the height of the grunge alternative rock era. This one has a hidden track, the very last track, disgustipated. Hidden tracks seem to be in vogue around this time, so this is no exception.

Speaker 5:

It's usually the last song in the album as well, this one.

Speaker 3:

I don't want to spoil it, but I'm sure if you're listening to this you're a fan debut studio album produced by Sylvia Massey and recorded at Sound City Studios in Van Nuys, california. The band the members we'll get to them in a minute. I mean, they're from all over the place, but Los Angeles I think it was home base for them, or they're considered to be from LA, I think, by default.

Speaker 3:

Uh like a lot of bands but um, it's a really interesting album in my opinion. Um, it features a mix of uh, of metal. Um, it's got progressive rock, alternative rock elements. Danny carey, amazing drummer influenced by, um, all you know so many different prog rock drummers. Of course, neil Peart my hero was also his Bill Bruford. There are a number of others, but there's that influence, there's rock elements. The lyrics are dark, introspective.

Speaker 4:

The lyrics are dark introspective.

Speaker 3:

I think I would probably suspect that comes from the backgrounds of the band members. Maynard James Keenan is the name of the lead singer. All the music was composed by the other members. Adam Jones on guitar super talented guitar player and has other talents. Danny Carey, one of the best drummers in the business today and over the last 20 plus years.

Speaker 3:

And on this album the bass player was Paul D'Amour. He was replaced in 95 by another bass player. His name escapes me Justin Chancellor, that's his name, but he left the band. It wasn't the thing where he got kicked out for being whatever, it was more. I guess he wanted to play guitar. I mean, from what I'm reading at Wikipedia or other sources online, he wanted to play guitar in. I mean, from what I'm reading at Wikipedia or other sources online, he wanted to play guitar in another band, so he left From my understanding he's.

Speaker 3:

You know he's since been playing with ministry, but as a basis, so I don't know what happened there, but nevertheless, you know, hey, he did a great job on this album.

Speaker 3:

At least Interestingly like, their instruments are listed. Like, adam jones on guitar, it's listed as bastard. Bastard a meter, or best bastardometer, I guess, is how you'd say it. Um, james keenan listed as uh, mistress decatur, non-vocals, uh, the basis. Paul D'Amour listed as bottom feeder and Danny carries drums were listed as membrane of phone. So pretty creative with, uh, you know terms that they're using. Um, the last song, again disgustipated, I guess, a mashup between disgusted and constipated. Uh, I don't know what that's all about, but uh, I guess a mashup between disgusted and constipated.

Speaker 3:

I don't know what that's all about, but nevertheless, you know we're going to get into the songs and we're going to listen to them. I love Tool. I think they're a great band. I really love A Perfect Circle. I used to listen to the two albums a lot, you know, back in the day and for some reason I didn't get into Tool early, but I was sort of like a late adapter to their catalog.

Speaker 3:

They came out with some really good albums after this, but we want to focus on this one and you know, the more I listen to the tracks on this album, the more I like them, and I think all of you will as well. So, of course, stick around at the end, because we're going to listen to all the songs, as we always do, and at the end we're going to Tim and I are going to give you our top three and we're going to have fun along the way. We've got a ton of uh, you know sound clips from tool time, all of that stuff. Tim's putting the guitar away away. He's going to join me in a minute. We're going to yuck it up. We've got a bunch of sound clips. They're hilarious. Um, major james keenan, I guess, was at one point in time he was in the army and he was. We were reading somewhere I think it was on wikipedia where he was influenced by the movie stripes, which led him to go into the army, which I think is hilarious.

Speaker 6:

Love that movie why would you go into the army, which I think is hilarious. Love that movie. Why would you go into the army, based on stripes?

Speaker 3:

I don't know, man, maybe it was Ox, you know, wanting to be the lean, mean fighting machine, that kind of thing I thought to myself join the army, it's free.

Speaker 7:

So I figured while I'm here I'll lose a few pounds. And you got what a six to eight week training program here A real tough one A real tough one which is perfect for me. Which is perfect for me. I'm going to walk out of here a lean, mean fighting machine.

Speaker 3:

So yeah, maybe that was his, this is definitely yeah.

Speaker 6:

Army music almost yeah, lots of yeah, it's out there, it's yeah. I mean, I think, honestly, if this band wasn't a hard rock band, you know, maybe, just maybe they could have been like a jazz quartet sort of, maybe like spun it a little bit jazzy, I don't know.

Speaker 8:

I don't think so, Tim.

Speaker 6:

Well, I tried to play a couple of jazz, jazzy uh chord variations to the uh the power the power in your defense.

Speaker 3:

I mean, these guys are so talented they could play it if they wanted to. It's just not what they do right, they don wanted to.

Speaker 6:

It's just not what they do, right? They don't want that. This is not their persona. They want more power. I want maybe less power. What do we need? We're coming at you with chainsaws here and I think you know it's important to say we are going to be, you know, head and mouth above water. This, this is a strong undertow, a strong current, and I think we're just gonna try to stay right above the water here. Sure.

Speaker 3:

Speaking of that, the artwork for the album cover. It's this weird ring kind of a thing.

Speaker 6:

I don't know what it is. It's like a rib cage or something. Yeah, yeah, like a rib cage. It's a rib cage, I think.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, it ended up becoming their. It's a rib cage, I think. Yeah, it ended up becoming their, like the band logo Kind of like the Starman with Rush. Starman oh, that's a David Bowie thing. I'm talking more about the logo for Rush, but I appreciate where you're going with that. Anyway, yeah, but yeah, any other thoughts, Any other anecdotes Before we get into the album?

Speaker 6:

I don't know. I think I enjoyed it. I'm not afraid. I could be afraid sometimes. Sometimes I'm pretty afraid I'm not afraid anymore and it is one louder and it's just a great, great album. If you're in the mood and you love hard rock and heavy metal, this is for you yeah, it is good.

Speaker 3:

I mean it's good for that kind of thing. And you know what I mean. We're, I mean our thing. We're kind of upbeat. You know we like to yuck it up this is a really serious album I mean we're gonna so like before you get

Speaker 5:

you know hating on us.

Speaker 3:

We're trying to lighten the mood. We're trying to lighten the mood. We're trying to lighten the mood, but with the understanding that some of these songs are very serious.

Speaker 6:

We know that.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, I mean we want to apologize in advance. We're not here to shit on it either, you know, we just thought you know they need to lighten up a little bit, or, you know, maybe you might have it up a little bit. You know, maybe you might have fun looking at it from a different lens or whatever. But uh, and you know, I've seen Maynard James Keene. Maynard James Keene seems like a pretty cool guy, good sense of humor, yeah, yeah, he's. He's lighthearted, it seems.

Speaker 3:

He's sung some really you, really you know songs that are tolerated through the uh, the generations here that could be a song that's tolerated for generations that's right, and he and he's done, he's done these songs well, speaking of which, intolerance is the name of the very first song, and it's a non-hit.

Speaker 6:

So it's a non-hit, okay, I like your.

Speaker 3:

You know I like the, I like that transition and if you listen closely, there's like a I don't know what that sound is. We probably should Crickets, something like that. It's going to start rocking in a second.

Speaker 6:

Receipt paper.

Speaker 3:

Beavis and Butthead style. There we go, it's like automatic. You can hear it. It'sley carey drums. Adam jones, rated 75th best guitar player in the rolling stone. He's got quite a a list oh yes accomplishments yeah film music video yeah yeah, the music videos he's done those all these guys are super talented put away the dagger, it's tolerable.

Speaker 6:

I like the drums, right Drum and bass.

Speaker 10:

Oh, bitch, you got jacked, bitch oh.

Speaker 6:

The song's premise is that those who sit by idly while others commit crimes are just as bad as the criminals. Okay, it's noble. Dance, sing, wait, die Lie.

Speaker 3:

They're all kind of the same. They're all the same, they overlap one another Right.

Speaker 6:

I'm not innocent, you're not innocent.

Speaker 1:

You're not innocent.

Speaker 2:

No one's innocent I guess not.

Speaker 10:

Oh bitch.

Speaker 1:

How about us who are lactose intolerant?

Speaker 5:

What the fuck is he talking about? That's a good question.

Speaker 6:

Syncopated drum is very good. They make sure the metallic effects of the guitar are there.

Speaker 3:

You should care, okay, well, if somebody's lying, cheating and stealing.

Speaker 6:

I agree. You can't just be like bitch I don't care, Can't do that, Can't be that way, Don't tolerate, I will go down to hell.

Speaker 3:

Maybe go down to hell or something, because they're not in a Sunday. By cheating steel and you're the damned, you're going down, down to hell.

Speaker 6:

Well, let's keep our head above water here. Yeah, yeah.

Speaker 3:

Don't get stuck in the undertow, Maybe lighting up on the line cheating, stealing you want to pace yourself with those things.

Speaker 6:

What do you call the people that do that a lot? A sociopath or something? Yeah, that's a good word. Somebody that doesn't understand other people's feelings? Yeah, yeah, saul will tell us all about that on song number two. Oh yeah, his feelings Nah, we have. I think the band's feelings are coming out. What are the feelings? What do you think their feelings are? It's going to call you out. All right, they're going to jack you up if you're not doing something, right?

Speaker 7:

My feelings are hurt. My feelings are hurt, okay.

Speaker 6:

They're like that angry parent figure that's going to yell at you when you're doing something bad.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, well, they're very committed to their values. I think even during this tour, they canceled some shows because the venues were owned by Scientology, some shows because the venues were owned by Scientology. And I guess, like no, I'm serious, like they're like their credo at the time, or still is probably is like something to the effect of uh, interesting.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, um yeah, not supporting any type of an institution. That gets in the way of self development, right, there's something to that effect, and I, I mean I actually I actually admire and that gets in the way of self-development, right, there's something to that effect, and I mean I actually admire that about them.

Speaker 6:

Yeah, you got to stand by your you gotta think for yourselves yeah, yeah, stick to your principles.

Speaker 3:

Think for yourself. People just are sheep, you know they just go. Electric sheep, which is the name of their good. Look at the big brain on tim man. Oh yeah, exactly, electric sheep. That was a band that he was in. Uh, that danny carrie was in right and yeah, maynard oh, we'll look it up in a second. But yeah, electric Sheep was a band for the past.

Speaker 9:

I was in Lovely Lads.

Speaker 3:

That's right, All right. Shout out to Nigel Tufnell from Spinal Tap. That was a Spinal Tap-y kind of a moment I was in.

Speaker 5:

Idle Sheep or.

Speaker 3:

Electric Sheep. I was in Lovely Lads All right. Next song Prison Sex you said it not me. Secondary. Yeah, all right, I guess this is about serious stuff about child abuse, but just the term prison sex. We couldn't help ourselves. We've got a bunch of clips in here. Forgive us, here we go. It's a great song. It's a hit, so out of the discussion, but we'll listen to it.

Speaker 6:

It's about the cynical nature of abuse. Yeah, it's about the cynical nature of abuse.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, that beginning sounds like a Driving and Crying song. We don't have to get into it. They came out around the same time Driving and Crying.

Speaker 9:

Yeah.

Speaker 6:

No no, no, not Crying. What does Vestal mean?

Speaker 3:

Uh, it's, that's a beautiful term. Holy Okay, yeah.

Speaker 6:

Miracle.

Speaker 3:

It's catchy, it's a catchy metal song here I like it, it's not just scream, your head off. Oh pure, that still is pure.

Speaker 2:

Okay, I want to smell man what?

Speaker 7:

What we're going to federal. Pound me in the ass prison.

Speaker 6:

Oh, it's Tim's time? I don't think so.

Speaker 3:

That wasn't me. Oh, okay, okay, yeah.

Speaker 6:

No, I'll take the fall for that. I would hate to go to prison. It would be horrible.

Speaker 11:

Well.

Speaker 9:

I agree.

Speaker 3:

I think it'd be worse for you? I would. Your feet are a little softer than mine.

Speaker 11:

You throw a little rouge on you, tuck your sack back to your game.

Speaker 2:

No.

Speaker 6:

I did spend the night in the slammer, actually.

Speaker 4:

Drinking on the beach, yeah.

Speaker 6:

Drinking on the beach past hours. It's not public property after hours. Ah yeah, people do crazy stuff on the beach and they ruin it for everybody. Is there like a beach jail?

Speaker 2:

oh no, it's a jail jail it's like pounding me in the ass jail oh, I need an adult Jail, jail.

Speaker 7:

It's like pounding me in the ass Jail I need an adult I don't want to go to any prison.

Speaker 11:

I have a couple fractions of zeros filed off into a private bank account. You throw a little rouge on ya.

Speaker 3:

Tuck your sack back. Oh, how do you make that funny? I can't say I've had that combination of those three things on my hands ever in my life. I'm not saying that with pride or shame. You're not a witness. Yeah, I say it with thanks that I've never been put in that position. I never thought of it that way, but now I'm starting to feel bad about those earlier clips.

Speaker 6:

Danny Carey said it will annoy a lot of people, which is half the fun.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, it's provocative, I get it. But, what's more provocative? That or the actual um, yeah, um, molesting of a child? That's. I mean, that is the most uh, insulting, uh, I could see why that angers people. Yeah, I have. No, it didn't annoy me, I thought it was. I applaud them for it, you know right I mean even though it was graphic and it it kind of, you know, like the imagery of, like the stuff on his hand.

Speaker 3:

That's like you know it's uncomfortable, but maybe it needs to be put in that way in order to you know, just to you know, put it into perspective, how, how bad it must feel for the, for the abused. So you know, I, I, yeah I didn't, so anyway for sure. Going on to the next song, this is Sober, far and away the most listened to and popular song on the album, this one and one. We just heard nine hits. Let's take a listen.

Speaker 2:

Rolling doobies.

Speaker 6:

Okay, cali Sober.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, that is Cali Sober. Yeah, that is Cali Sober. That's right, we got the lyrics right in front of us. I remember, okay, this might put a whole new page out on this song.

Speaker 6:

for me this could be a jazzy number. Throw a little little ham and eggs on the griddle.

Speaker 3:

That little jazz flute would be good on this too.

Speaker 2:

Do-do-do-do-do-do-do-do.

Speaker 4:

Ba-ba-dee-da-ba-ba.

Speaker 2:

We got it now.

Speaker 3:

That's baby music, that's it.

Speaker 9:

Wait just a minute, wait a minute.

Speaker 3:

Whistle the thing in that's like why is she doing something about?

Speaker 6:

all of the Stuff, the bad stuff.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, or like just the drinking which leads to a ton of bad stuff. That's true. I don't think it's an unfair question.

Speaker 7:

No.

Speaker 3:

I mean he didn't have to put the fucking in there, yeah, but but he made his point. Never was.

Speaker 9:

Yeah.

Speaker 6:

Even Jesus was like let's get these people some wine sometimes, right, that's true, the winemaker I mean.

Speaker 3:

Or Dionysus, depending on which.

Speaker 6:

Shout out to the tobacco chewers out there Getting a little buzz on yeah, let's stop that shit. Yeah, pack a Pack a nice.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, copenhagen, that's more of a dip. The chew is like the leaf right.

Speaker 6:

Oh the leaf, is that stuff's strong. Straight up Packin' lips, that stuff's strong.

Speaker 3:

Straight up Back and lips. I've been sick, just dizzy From your chew.

Speaker 6:

Oh yeah, faint in a field Too effed up on chew. Oh yeah, throwing up, yeah, yeah, that's the worst when you're like Young Right, yeah, I don't say how old, yeah, throwing up, yeah, yeah, that's the worst when you're like young, right, yeah, I don't see how old. No, you don't know what it is. Try it, try it, man, try it.

Speaker 4:

People are always peer-pressuring.

Speaker 2:

Ah, that feels, that feels better.

Speaker 9:

I am just an imbecile. I will only complicate you Trust in me and fall as well. I will find a center in you. I will chew it up and leave. Trust me, trust me, trust me, trust me, trust me. Why can't we not be sober?

Speaker 6:

I just want to not think further. Why can't we sleep for ever? Set those alarms? People Set a mental alarm, yeah.

Speaker 3:

I mean we can be California soldiers. I don't know.

Speaker 6:

And we can set our alarms by the power of our minds.

Speaker 3:

Okay, yeah, but like Kramer, he's like he's by the power of our minds. We have a look-brainer, it's like 630 tomorrow.

Speaker 6:

Let's go, all right.

Speaker 3:

I got it set. Ow ow, ow, ow, shout out to the tool designers out there. All right, that was a good one. What do we got next?

Speaker 11:

Well, isn't that special.

Speaker 6:

Ah that was. This is bottom. We got the bottom.

Speaker 3:

All right, yeah. Next song. It's called Bottom Bottom, and no sign though that. Oh, I like that. It's a lot of pissing and moaning in this song.

Speaker 9:

I take head, shoulders, knees and toes.

Speaker 4:

Okay, you can have those Fed.

Speaker 6:

You know you've got to be fed, but you need to take the whole apple. You can't be stealing the apple when you pierced the skin of a piece of fruit.

Speaker 1:

You bought the whole fruit, not a third of an apple, not a half of a banana.

Speaker 11:

I am dead inside.

Speaker 3:

Shout out to Michael Scott.

Speaker 2:

He called the shit.

Speaker 1:

He called the shit Shout out to Pat Gilmore.

Speaker 3:

All these, all these movies Kind of came out around that.

Speaker 5:

Yeah well, until this bill is paid, the food court Is closed.

Speaker 6:

He's lying, he's cheating, he's stealing your fruit. Well, I hope his shit is, you know, density. He's Eating a lot of fruit. So I like this little solo here. Whoa, it's got me in trance. It's trance style man.

Speaker 3:

It is kinda cool.

Speaker 9:

If I let you, you would make me destroy myself.

Speaker 5:

The fuck is he talking about?

Speaker 9:

Fuck it. This is where I tune out.

Speaker 3:

It's tolerable A lot of religion in this.

Speaker 9:

My feelings are hurt.

Speaker 11:

There's no choice but to confront you, to engage you.

Speaker 9:

To erase you. I've gone to great lengths to expand my threshold of pain.

Speaker 5:

What the fuck is he talking about? What the fuck?

Speaker 11:

I am dead inside.

Speaker 3:

I love that, michael Scott, I am dead inside. I love that, michael Scott, I am dead inside.

Speaker 2:

We're live. Come on, we're going streaky. We're live. Come on, woo Woo, I'm not afraid anymore.

Speaker 8:

Well, it's one night, isn't it?

Speaker 3:

Shout out to the Donnie Darko fans. Shout out to the Spinal Tap fans.

Speaker 6:

Church Lady, church Lady, where you at.

Speaker 2:

Satan.

Speaker 6:

Boo Satan.

Speaker 3:

That was a good use of the grunt there.

Speaker 2:

I love that. You're a damn man. You keep digging.

Speaker 6:

You'll find something. Shut the holes, fans holes fans. Still going. Hatred keeps it alive. What?

Speaker 3:

Now they're rocking.

Speaker 10:

Oh, bitch, you got jacked bitch.

Speaker 1:

Bitch, I don't care oh wait, just a minute shot brad hamilton oh, I'm hang gliding, honey, take a good picture, I'm dead.

Speaker 4:

That was a good one.

Speaker 3:

I was thinking the song, the bottom was sweet.

Speaker 6:

Yeah, the bottom was really good. That was good man.

Speaker 3:

I mean.

Speaker 6:

Yeah.

Speaker 3:

On many levels I'm digging it All right. So we got to go. Crawl Away is the next one. So this is.

Speaker 6:

Crawl Away. Yeah, do what I say, just may.

Speaker 3:

Was the ass flute.

Speaker 6:

What do you say?

Speaker 10:

Mom say that happiness is from magic rays of sunshine that come down when you're feeling blue.

Speaker 2:

Oh, and I come down when you're feeling blue.

Speaker 10:

How about I just go eat some hay?

Speaker 6:

This one's angsty as well, you know it builds up into something here.

Speaker 3:

You think they tuned the guitar in the downward D. What is it called?

Speaker 6:

I think all these songs are in drop D. It really helps a singer with a low voice. The one-finger power chords the lower octave jams. I like it.

Speaker 3:

I think it makes it easier to play it. It adds a little hair to it.

Speaker 6:

It just may. I can make things out of clay. Listen to what I say that rake was. I was just putting it back where it belonged, in the woods with his friends.

Speaker 9:

In the woods with his friends.

Speaker 2:

It's good bass work.

Speaker 6:

This is classic, Like deep purple riffs right here.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, I like it. That's good, well used. I do. I like their balance of grunge and metal on this. They do it really well Alice in Chains did it well too.

Speaker 6:

I thought it's a little stripped away for this band, I think In a way.

Speaker 5:

Lay by the Bay. It's a little harsh.

Speaker 6:

That was a good one. Okay, yeah, paul T Moore is crushing it on this one. Agreed, he didn't want to play the bass, but he ended up playing bass anyway, I know For the other band. Yeah, the other band.

Speaker 3:

I don't want to say that they're a lesser band, because I mean, I'm not really familiar with Ministry.

Speaker 6:

Yeah, no Ministry.

Speaker 3:

We could always do one of their albums, or not, depending on your mood. I don't know I'll have to listen to it.

Speaker 2:

I don't even know if I want to do it.

Speaker 10:

We just made, we just made.

Speaker 1:

How about I just go eat some, hay? Oh no.

Speaker 9:

We suck again. This is love, this is my love for you.

Speaker 6:

This is my love for you. Whoa metal scrapage.

Speaker 2:

This is my love for you. This is my love for you.

Speaker 3:

This is my love for you. It's a little less melodic than the last one.

Speaker 6:

Holy crap, they just went up to chromatic. This is like kind of a time signature Balls to the wall. Time signature 16th notes out of the wazoo, 30 second notes. Yeah, 34 over 34 on the floor.

Speaker 5:

This is like a you'll pay listen to what I say, yeah.

Speaker 3:

I don't mean to be crude or anything, but this is sort of like an orgy of notes. I want to All right that one.

Speaker 6:

What the fuck is he talking about?

Speaker 5:

I can make things out of clay. What the fuck is he talking about there?

Speaker 6:

you go.

Speaker 7:

Oh, if you don't stay.

Speaker 6:

I might my feelings, might my feelings. You heard, If you're going to go, then go.

Speaker 2:

If you're going to spew, spew in this, I don't know what you're trying to say you don't want to play.

Speaker 1:

What you want and what you need. Don't make a fuck to me. Shut the fuck up. I didn't say anything.

Speaker 8:

Oh, whoa, whoa.

Speaker 3:

Okay, that may have shot up to number one for me. I know, I see.

Speaker 6:

I mean.

Speaker 1:

Shut the fuck up, Donnie All right this one is Swamp.

Speaker 3:

Song that was for always. Swamp Song. Oh gosh.

Speaker 6:

Getting swampy Undertow in the swamp is something Swamp undertow why don't you watch when you stumble in?

Speaker 9:

You ain't need it for going in.

Speaker 7:

You ain't need it for going in. His walk is sticking. He thinks I get locked in. He's sure stupid. The lid's your end fucker. My feelings are hurt, he thinks I get locked in.

Speaker 1:

He's sure a dumbass. The lid's your end, fucker.

Speaker 7:

I hope it sucks you down, J-Homer. You sure do suck tonight, Jay Homer you sure do suck tonight.

Speaker 11:

Yeah, suck like a fox, ha ha ha, ha, ha ha.

Speaker 6:

Oh man, that's just the best. This fog is thick, oh no.

Speaker 3:

We suck again. They're really angry at this guy man. They just want him to fucking die in quicksand you know.

Speaker 6:

Yeah, that's a horrible way to go. You need good calves. Good calves to dance in some quicksand.

Speaker 9:

You know yeah.

Speaker 8:

I take head, shoulders, knees and toes, Knees and toes.

Speaker 6:

Well, you're in the knee deep. You're knee deep at this point here, probably about halfway.

Speaker 1:

Oh no, we suck again. Oh no, we suck again.

Speaker 7:

Jay Homer, you sure do suck tonight.

Speaker 11:

Yeah, suck like a fuck, or you'll pay.

Speaker 6:

I like this little bit here. This is good Taking us. Yeah, it's very froggy, Spacey froggy yeah, it's like froggy, stacy froggy.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, it's like frog metal.

Speaker 10:

Death band can't breathe, oh no. Oh no, breathing is a safe and effective way Of fighting death and death related symptoms.

Speaker 4:

Whoa, whoa, Take it easy champ.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, I think I would need to sit.

Speaker 6:

the next couple plays off. My ears hurt after that one, I know.

Speaker 9:

This is pretty hard.

Speaker 2:

I'm tired of this, Grandpa.

Speaker 6:

Grandpa, hey, listen, sport. I'm sorry, I know. Yeah, we'll keep, yeah, keep it going. No, keep it up. Head, shoulders, knees and toes Waiting me. Oh, man Calling, name calling.

Speaker 3:

Oh, he's been calling him a belligerent fucker. The whole song.

Speaker 7:

My feelings are hurt, boy.

Speaker 11:

I am dead inside.

Speaker 3:

After that, one geez A little palate cleanser. Maybe that was more than a little harsh.

Speaker 6:

Yeah, we need some steely Dan to.

Speaker 5:

No, we'll keep power through.

Speaker 6:

I think we need some. What do we need? A little more power. What do we need More power?

Speaker 3:

All right, this is Undertow the song. Right? You can't get sucked into that undertow.

Speaker 6:

You know tread Now. We got quicksand, we got water yeah, a lot of. There's a mountain falling on you, A natural disaster. There's a volcano erupting Run.

Speaker 2:

Yeah.

Speaker 6:

There's some prison convicts.

Speaker 3:

There's a lot of mouth opening and sucking, not swallowing, swallowing.

Speaker 4:

I feel dirty.

Speaker 8:

Shut up, shut up, shut up, shut up, shut up, shut up, shut the fuck up, donnie, I take head, shoulders, knees and toes. Shut the fuck up.

Speaker 6:

Whoa, Whoa. They could end their song for me. Oh man, we're not even a third of the way in. I don't know how these guys have the energy to do this. This is insane.

Speaker 3:

It does. It takes a lot of energy to get caught in it. Yeah.

Speaker 6:

You got to get some chamomile and some rose petal water.

Speaker 3:

Well if you need that extra push over the cliff in your workouts put these on the headphones. Shout out to, by the way, shout out to the bench pressers out there.

Speaker 6:

Oh yeah Shout out.

Speaker 1:

I'm exhausted.

Speaker 10:

I'm exhausted.

Speaker 6:

Shout out to the Swallows so comfortable. That's good. I'm glad you're comfortable.

Speaker 3:

I think it's the drums that are wearing brown Shut up.

Speaker 8:

No, I'm serious. I take head, shoulders, knees and toes.

Speaker 6:

knees and toes Okay you can have those Ow.

Speaker 8:

Well, it's one louder, isn't it?

Speaker 1:

What? Oh wait just a minute, I'm back.

Speaker 11:

I can hear it Take it easy, champ.

Speaker 6:

Undertow. I got it. There's a current yeah.

Speaker 11:

The undertow that hasn't seen the light. Life just keeps happening Out of the undertow.

Speaker 6:

You are out of the area.

Speaker 8:

How does he keep those?

Speaker 11:

notes. Life is like hey, guess what?

Speaker 6:

I don't know Guess what. We're going to have. Another shred session, brother. Just more, more shred.

Speaker 11:

And you're like what? And it's like BAM More life. It just never stops giving you more life.

Speaker 3:

That's a guy's name, theo. Shout out to Theo, I love this guy. It more life, that's okay.

Speaker 6:

That's a guy's name, theo.

Speaker 3:

Shout out to Theo I love this guy.

Speaker 11:

That's life. Hey, you want another scoop of life, boy?

Speaker 3:

All right. So let's get another scoop of Tool here. This is Four degrees, Four degrees. It's like another rule of post-grunge songs they always have to have a sitar with it and then they start rocking out. So this is where I'm suspecting this is going.

Speaker 6:

Here we go. Sitars are metal man yeah.

Speaker 3:

I like the transition. It's like ding ding, ding ding and then go down to the drop D.

Speaker 6:

I thought this was going to be their rock. Ballad from the intro in my notes and then, within 20 seconds, they just again flip the pull the magic carpet ride from underneath your feet.

Speaker 3:

Sitar to drop D.

Speaker 6:

It's a it'sa class but you're calm beneath the castles. So, cavern treasures, let's go digging I'm tired of this, Grandpa.

Speaker 1:

That's too damn bad. You keep digging Bring it out.

Speaker 6:

Bring it out and take you back in A lot of yous and won'ts and like the way.

Speaker 3:

I like how he plays the chords, sort of like Slides and the French.

Speaker 6:

Definitely very skilled in their metal shred.

Speaker 1:

Well, isn't that special, you love?

Speaker 5:

to feel afraid. Can you let me show you another way?

Speaker 2:

I feel so, kill what you want to Save what's left and needed. Save your love. It's just too short to be true. The lyrics are kind of vague, but they're cool.

Speaker 6:

I'm too short to forget. The lyrics are kind of vague, but they're cool. I'm too short. Sometimes I need a step ladder. Yeah, I'm just too short there, you know. Now, just come back running. Ah, you don't have to run. Shout out to the runners. Yep, shout out to the runners. It won't be long Until you increase or decrease your mile time. Yeah, your PO2 max.

Speaker 3:

I like the guitar part right here. This is I like the guitar part in here.

Speaker 6:

This is where they could have a little jazz solo, I think maybe.

Speaker 3:

Hey, this room, yeah, for a little jazz?

Speaker 8:

I don't think so, Tim.

Speaker 6:

Okay what he's singing, kind of like a minstrel, like a renaissance fest yeah, it's the proggy part of it.

Speaker 10:

What do we need? More power.

Speaker 6:

All right Tim, the tool man Taylor.

Speaker 8:

I'm a tool man? I don't think so, Tim.

Speaker 6:

I am, I can deal with a screwdriver, screw gun but are you a tool?

Speaker 3:

man of the band tool man band yeah, are you still the tool man when it comes to the band?

Speaker 6:

or what we're listening to. I would say I'm not afraid of them.

Speaker 10:

I used to be.

Speaker 6:

I used to be afraid of them. I've seen that there's nothing to be afraid of them. Uh, I've seen that there's nothing to be afraid of. Um right, no, I, but I will neither. You're not in the pocket. I am not in the pocket, but I like certain aspects and songs. Yeah, yeah, it'll take some time, some tool time, for me to be a Tim the Toolman Taylor, yet Fair enough Ow. A bit solo here oh they're tight, see. Oh, ow.

Speaker 3:

Little bass.

Speaker 11:

Come on, guys.

Speaker 7:

Jam it into life. I love lamp.

Speaker 6:

Ooh so strong.

Speaker 9:

Just like I was a lovely lad.

Speaker 3:

Alright, where are we at man? We got Flood, okay.

Speaker 6:

We got flood and Disgustipated. Yeah, that's the last one.

Speaker 3:

So there's a couple tracks away from that. Granted, this one's a seven-minute song, the other one's a 15-minute song, but you know, we can truncate it. We can truncate it. This is kind of Black Sabbath-y.

Speaker 6:

Yeah, it is. I do like their intros.

Speaker 3:

I mean it could be a little jazzier. No, this is cool when you're in the mood for it. This is like a. This is like a strip club song for herman munsters.

Speaker 5:

Stripper sister what the fuck is he talking about?

Speaker 3:

I don't know, I don't know what I'm talking about. All right, I don't know what I'm listening to at this point, and how is this related to a flood? I'm waiting for an explanation.

Speaker 6:

Oh, it's tolerable. All right, Danny.

Speaker 4:

Danny.

Speaker 10:

Oh, bitch, you got jacked bitch.

Speaker 7:

We're going to federal pound me in the ass prison.

Speaker 2:

Rolling doobies.

Speaker 3:

If the flood comes? We're just playing sound.

Speaker 6:

I don't even know what part of the song we're in. This is still the intro. Yeah, this is crazy. We still know nothing about the flood. Why Is the mountain still falling on us? I don't know. Is the flood a metaphor? Did somebody get these convicts?

Speaker 3:

Our lyrics getting sung right now. I can't even tell.

Speaker 2:

This is heavy.

Speaker 6:

This is heavy boy.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, they're trying to make this, this the heaviest song ever, of all time, of all time this has to be heavy the flood.

Speaker 6:

I mean, yeah, it makes sense Making the undercurrents even stronger.

Speaker 3:

Why this didn't win a Grammy is beyond me. Well, no, it isn't. I totally see why.

Speaker 6:

Grammy. Is it mine, my Grammy?

Speaker 3:

Well, I would claim what it's mine little foreshadowing here.

Speaker 6:

Same, god damn it.

Speaker 3:

This is a four clocking in at four minutes yeah, it's like how are they going to get through all this in less than two minutes left, or less than three minutes, three and a half minutes.

Speaker 2:

I'm exhausted, I am All I know.

Speaker 6:

All I believe, crumbling images, scramble to reach higher ground, sanity, climbing to a new place. The moving, the moving is tough. You know it is. I don't like it. San Fran, the housing market's crazy there, yeah.

Speaker 3:

You're going to move there.

Speaker 6:

I don't know. It is very beautiful. From what I've heard, yeah, it is.

Speaker 4:

I've been there.

Speaker 3:

I never have been there.

Speaker 2:

I haven't been there since.

Speaker 6:

Ground is not a rock. I thought it to be. You're not. You're almost there.

Speaker 2:

You're not Two damn men.

Speaker 6:

And they're all syncopated, they playing together, kind of. This sounds a little bit like Sober, doesn't it? Yeah, this sounds a little bit like Sober, doesn't it?

Speaker 4:

I'm just someone coming in on me. I'm just your last time you put me on the stand.

Speaker 3:

It is, it's a character. It is. It's a list of the songs.

Speaker 6:

It's in this album, like from beginning to end.

Speaker 3:

It's tough, you know, but it's good. I mean, yeah, I know what I'm listening to. It's like incredible. It's just like listening to the whole. It's like more life. It's like that more life guy right there, danny, carries drums. I mean, I'm a drum guy. I love the drums.

Speaker 2:

Well, it's one louder, isn't it?

Speaker 3:

Well, it's one louder. Yeah, I'm going to have to go back to that.

Speaker 11:

So here's the last song. Disgustipated Hi Tim the Tool man, taylor, and you all know my assistant Al this land is boar land.

Speaker 3:

That was Tim. That wasn't me. That was Al. No, that was Al. That was me. That was Al. That was Al.

Speaker 6:

We've got that was the Tim Atul band. We've got some Saul 8 soundtrack here.

Speaker 3:

Yeah.

Speaker 6:

Rock and roll.

Speaker 3:

Well, yeah, in the line of thought of Saul.

Speaker 7:

My feelings are hurt. My feelings are hurt, okay.

Speaker 3:

We heard you the first time, thank you.

Speaker 6:

Oh, is that a calf? A little milk.

Speaker 1:

How about us who are lactose intolerant?

Speaker 6:

Okay, Christopher, you'reant. Okay, christopher, you're back. Yeah, and the angel of the Lord came unto me, snatching me up from my place of slumber and took me on high Sounds like and I'm still, as I walk through the spaces between the air itself.

Speaker 5:

What the fuck is he talking about? Look, we're on the edge of a vast, far blend of our own Midwest. And as what the fuck is he?

Speaker 6:

talking about. This is like some Les Claypool stuff going on.

Speaker 3:

It does sound like him, but With the megaphone. Yeah, reverend Maynard, are you crying this?

Speaker 6:

is like a slam poetry hour For the end of the album.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, these are all like yeah, the holocaust metaphors, or the the vegetable metaphors for the holocaust. It's clearly like the vegetable metaphor is for the Holocaust. It's clearly anti-religion.

Speaker 6:

The credits on the album read Phone message.

Speaker 2:

Bill the landlord.

Speaker 6:

Disgustipated is from 2.33 to 6.45. Right, right, apparently, crickets. There's crickets and a phone message as well.

Speaker 11:

Just life just keeps happening. Life is like hey, guess what, and you're like what, and it's like more life. It just never stops giving you more life. That's life, hey, you want another scoop of life, boy.

Speaker 6:

Okay, now we're back to animal noises yeah, noises. Disgustipated his first coin in a Popeye comic book in the 1930s to express a combined feeling of disgust and exasperation with the situation. I'm exhausted involving olive oil. Shout out to Chris Berman, since the situation has obviously been resolved by Popeye eating spinach, we could conclude that this song was intended to promote vegetarianism. What, oh, because they're talking about? Maybe, like the meat industry?

Speaker 3:

What Are they vegetarians?

Speaker 6:

They might be man. A lot of metalheads are vegetarians, Surprisingly.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, that is interesting. I didn't know that either.

Speaker 6:

My one roommate in college was a metalhead Surprisingly. Yeah, that is interesting. I didn't know that either. My one roommate in college was a metalhead and only ate veggie patties Freezer veggie patties.

Speaker 3:

I think it was a value play. It was college.

Speaker 4:

That's true.

Speaker 6:

So much sodium.

Speaker 3:

You know I get that life beats on life. I like that. I'm kind of afraid oh, bitch, you got jacked. Bitch, I need an adult.

Speaker 10:

I'm kind of afraid yeah, oh, bitch, you got jacked bitch.

Speaker 7:

I need an adult.

Speaker 1:

Wait just a minute. Does anybody knock anymore? Yeah, anymore.

Speaker 6:

I'll take manslaughter one. Put the deal on the table. Jack Some law and order. I've been watching way too much law and order.

Speaker 2:

I don't want to go to any prison. Feeds are live.

Speaker 6:

Alright, well, I think this one's not going to be in my top three.

Speaker 3:

Well, you know, during, well, this is probably this is going to dissipate, and then for a number of minutes it's going to go just run and then maybe get to the end listen to the end If not, that's fine too. It's just this. It's just. It's just like a. What the fuck is he talking about?

Speaker 6:

There's only just a minute left, just a little queer.

Speaker 3:

It's just like a minute of squeaking. So over that Take it easy, champ.

Speaker 1:

Maybe sit the next couple of days out.

Speaker 3:

Oh yeah, so they have like the crickets Well. Well, this would be kind of cool yeah within the crickets we can give our top three yes yes, yeah, what do you say um? I just may, all right, no, seriously, what's your number?

Speaker 6:

I am going to go get the list up here. Um, yeah, let me see, uh, I really like, uh, the ones that I liked were swamp song. Oh really, I think that's gonna be my number. No, I'm gonna say, uh, number one in or number three, sorry, uh, intolerable, my number three intolerance, intolerance.

Speaker 3:

Yes, the first song that was yeah it was good.

Speaker 6:

Yeah, lie, cheat and steal. That's my, that's my three.

Speaker 3:

No, that's a good three. I'm going to go deep here. I'm going to maybe go bottom.

Speaker 6:

Oh, okay.

Speaker 3:

It just had that beat to it. It contrasted well with crawl away, yeah, and uh, I, I just uh. The musicianship was very like it was excellent, so I'm gonna go with all right my number two.

Speaker 6:

I'm going crawl away because it had a good placement. You know, it's sort of instead of an up and down round and round, it was like just like a little bit just left and right and then up and down, you know what I mean yeah, um, yeah, yeah not to be too technical no no, that's fair like a roller coaster ride, you know I'm gonna go.

Speaker 3:

Four percent is my number two because it had. It was a change of pace, it had some cool chords in it and um degree four degree yeah, four degree yes, that was a good one.

Speaker 6:

Yes, I thought it was take it all away yeah, it was a little bit.

Speaker 3:

It was like much different all the way in yeah exactly yeah yeah, uh.

Speaker 6:

Well then, swamp song is my number one. That was the one that did, like the that really fast paced I mean, yeah, because of that sort of novelty aspect, uh, and maybe for me to score some points with the metal heads, uh, I'm going Swamp. Song number one.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, it was really impressive. Yeah, technical, even if you don't like the song, they were so in the pocket. The musicianship was wild. Yeah, it was wild. It was very wild and that's the spectacle of it is that they can do this at the same time and be in total sync like that.

Speaker 4:

Yeah.

Speaker 3:

And that was what was mind-blowing about it. Um, but I, I I knew you were gonna put that in there, so I just that's an asterisk for me okay but what was like a better song, I thought, was crawl away like the one yes your, your number two? Um was, it was my number one, just uh, I was blown away. I was blown away by a lot of these songs. I hated them and liked them at the same time.

Speaker 3:

They were hitting nerves, and just the lyrics. Crawl Away was just the best example of them being in the pocket. For me, swamp Song was just too over the top. I didn't want to overshadow how good crawl away was. Yeah, so uh, I'll, yeah, I'll just like leave it at that, but um, yeah, I have a a deeper appreciation for the band after listening to this one for sure, yeah yeah any uh last thoughts well, I I'm not afraid, I can keep.

Speaker 6:

I can keep the metal going, I think.

Speaker 3:

We'll keep the metal going for another episode or two. We're going to check it out. We've got a good one coming. I don't want to spoil it, but we're going to throw some metal at you.

Speaker 6:

Some more metal, some more metal. You think we're done with metal. We've got more metal Just at you. Some more metal, some more metal. Yeah, I think we're done with metal. We've got more metal. Just keep more metal.

Speaker 7:

More metal.

Speaker 3:

All right, take care, rock on Bye.
