Speaker 1:

Here's Johnny, here's Johnny, here's Johnny, here's Johnny.

Speaker 2:

Here's Johnny.

Speaker 3:

Alright, thank you for listening to the Greatest Nine Hits. I'm Chris and playing Thriller on the acoustic guitar is my co-host, tim, and we want to thank you for listening to our Halloween episode, where we're going to be doing Michael Jackson's Thriller sixth studio album, released on November 30th of 1982 by Epic Records. Quincy Jones produced, worked with him during Off the Wall in 1979. We're going to get into all the songs. The amazing thing about this album is that all like there are nine songs, and seven of them are all songs that everybody knows, like all over the world, and it was a thing that Michael Jackson set out to do when he made this album. He was tired of you know one or two hits on a song. Why can't all of them be? You know great songs on the whole album being hits and emission accomplished. So kudos to Michael. God rest his soul. But nevertheless, we're going to do what we always do. We're going to. We're going to chat it up In the beginning of the show. We're going to listen to every song on this album. Rank our top three non-hits, but in this album, since all of them are hits, I think, with the exception of two, then we're going to just give you our three favorites, because I think it's worthy. You know, to just like, how would you rank Beat it versus Billy Jean, versus Thriller, versus Human Nature versus PYT? Everybody's got their song. You know. They may be the one that is the most downloaded, you know, or whatever, but they're, all you know, big songs and it's. You know. People are particular about the songs that they like. So we'll go through ours and we thank you for listening. Continue to listen to us and download us wherever you get your podcasts. Cake is up on PayPal, as you see fit.

Speaker 3:

A lot of musicians on this album. There were a lot of contributors, you know. It's not worth saying that. You know, of course, there were the guys from Toto. We all know that Eddie Van Halen played guitar on Beat it. You know you have the great guitar solo. I think it was Steve Lukather from Toto who did the rhythm guitar on that one. I think they did it for beer or something like that, I don't know. I hope hopefully Eddie got some nice Heideken to Steve Lukather's Blats or whatnot.

Speaker 3:

But that's neither here nor there. We're here to celebrate this album, listen to the songs, have some fun along the way. We've got some great sound clips. We've got great pop culture references taxi driver, old school, not in school, wedding crashers, you name it. We've got it. So we're going to listen to everything.

Speaker 3:

What else can I say about this? I think Baby Be Mine and the Lady of my Life are probably the two I think they're the two least down-literative of all the songs. But there's PYT, human Nature, billie Jean Beat it, thriller, the Girl Is Mine, duet with Paul McCartney. I just read everything in the pre-versed order. Tim over there just conked his head on the lamp there. We're getting off to a good start, man. We're getting off to a scary start. We hope everybody has a happy and safe Halloween. Get some good candy.

Speaker 3:

Some of the writers who collaborated see. Rod Temperton wrote Thriller. He wrote the Lady of my Life, steve Piccaro from Toto and John Battis wrote Human Nature. I didn't know that. James Ingram and Quincy Jones wrote Pretty Young Thing. Rod Temperton also wrote Baby Be Mine. Michael Jackson wrote Want to Be Starting Something. He also wrote the Girl Is Mine with Paul McCartney. There are buds back in the day.

Speaker 3:

I think Michael Jackson ruffled Paul McCartney's feathers a little bit when he bought the Beatles album collection. They had it falling out. I don't think they ever reconciled thereafter? I think it was a little. From what I read, it was contentious. That's all in the past. What we have left is some really incredible music. That's what's going to last, anyway. Janet Jackson, I think. Latoya they sing background vocals, janet Latoya who else? Maxine Waters what is this? I don't think it's the same. The Congresswoman this is just. I think it was on the first track. Julia Waters, all background vocals. Vincent Price does the voiceover on Thriller at the very end. Nobody knows who he was that guy. He used to do a lot of comedy, I think House on the Haunted Hill. You would see his movies on Saturday mornings along with the cartoons back in the 70s. That's how I remember him. He was always on those 70s variety shows. So shout out to Vincent Price. Passed away. Oh, october 25th 1993. Not too far off from Halloween. He was 82 though, so that's interesting. But what else can I say?

Speaker 1:

Here's Johnny.

Speaker 3:

There, he is All right. So, yeah, tim's going to join me in a sec. He's going to give his take on these For me. I mean, I've got my origin story. You know, I used to listen to albums at my house. We had stacks of them. This off the wall was, you know, my launching point to Michael Jackson, and he worked with Rod Temperton on that one. I think he played more of a role in where Quincy Jones, I guess, took the stage on this one and Temperton took a back seat. So but you know, it'd be interesting to get Tim. Tim was negative, I don't know four or five when this came out. Well, how you doing bud?

Speaker 4:

You all right. Negative positive yeah, net positive yeah, something like that.

Speaker 1:

Here's Johnny, I'm doing it.

Speaker 3:

I got the songs on a loop. All right, I'm turning those off. Oh my gosh.

Speaker 4:

Now I remember going to visit like my parents' family friend in New York and they just had a huge TV and the thriller, the thriller and beat it and all the Michael Jackson videos were on and I was just like glued to the television. They're like Tim, this is whoever, and I'm like uh-huh, no, I'm watching this craziness on the TV, Do you see this? And I was just like I had never seen anything like it.

Speaker 3:

People flipped man when he first did the moonwalk. That was like a huge thing.

Speaker 4:

Holy moly. His dancing skills, above all, was the most amazing thing of it. The makeup and the coordination was just nothing like I'd ever seen. And still to this day, I have pipe dreams of orchestrating a choreographing, maybe a short staged dance for a group of my friends to maybe watch. I don't know what song it would be, I don't know what song, but you need a song.

Speaker 3:

Yeah Well, he had the upbeat songs, he had some disco songs, he had some, you know, I guess, r&b songs on this. And then you've got another category of, let's say, you know, rock and horror with thriller, and then so it wasn't all they were trying, they were coming out of disco and I think that they wanted this to be a little bit more Makes sense. He's more accessible to other people with other musical tastes, and so they brought in all those collaborators and I think that that's what I mean.

Speaker 3:

that was a big part of it. It was that you could like the unbeat it, the, you know, the rhythm guitar and the guitar solo kind of gave it, you know, a toughness, which was really cool at that time.

Speaker 4:

Yeah, it was crossing heavy metal with that even hailing it was spooky, but year round spooky.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, but not just soulful things. So too.

Speaker 4:

There's some ballads. The girl is mine, the girl is mine, you know had all those. So I'm not familiar with off off the wall. I'll have to give that a listen.

Speaker 3:

It was more disco-y, but it was really really good. I you've heard a few of the songs. I'm sure you listen to it, you know, but this took it to the next level and it really did.

Speaker 4:

I guess what is this? Beat out the Eagles as a hotel. California is one of the best. It was between between them and this album, and then eventually it's the best selling album of all time, with estimated sales of 66 million copies worldwide.

Speaker 3:

Wow, just one eight grand album maybe four. It was like I said seven singles reached the top 10. That's insane.

Speaker 4:

Only the second and third song were not released as singles, which, yeah, the lady of my life, at the very end.

Speaker 3:

And then yeah, the girl be my or no? Well, the girl is mine, was a hit, that was the one with Paul McCartney. And then is it baby mine. I don't know, I don't know, I got all confused here. Well, let's see if we go to the talk amongst the girls.

Speaker 4:

Baby be mine, that's it.

Speaker 3:

That's what I meant, baby be mine. But it starts off with want to be starting something and it's, it's really, you know it's, it's, it's energetic. So you ready to, you're ready to kick it off? Any last words?

Speaker 4:

I don't know what do we have a sound club for?

Speaker 3:

you.

Speaker 4:

Yeah, I don't know yeah.

Speaker 5:

Say and let it out, give it some air, man.

Speaker 4:

Yeah, start it up. Oh, this is thriller. Oh, we did the little intro thing. Oh, now we got the bouncy, bouncy.

Speaker 3:

It wasn't about, like his, the contentiousness of the media and paparazzi.

Speaker 4:

Yeah, he hated the paparazzi.

Speaker 3:

They were starting something.

Speaker 4:

Also, billy Jean, always talking trash, everybody's talking trash.

Speaker 2:

He's talking to me. Are you like me now? Are you like me now Fuck?

Speaker 4:

you. Thank you, tom. Who are they? Yeah, I'm not open for interviews. I'm sorry, I didn't say something.

Speaker 3:

Can't do some shout outs.

Speaker 4:

Shout out to the walkers, joggers, bikers, treadmillers, sitters, standards, yeah.

Speaker 3:

Shout out to the drivers. Yeah, shout out to the trick or treaters.

Speaker 4:

This album will give you a lead foot, I'm sure, but also being a good, good mood.

Speaker 3:

That's right, I'm not a good mood for a lead foot, although I never heard thought about how people could listen to dance music in the car.

Speaker 1:

I mean I can say how it speaks.

Speaker 3:

It's like you're not going to be dancing around in the car. Yeah, it's not really. It is listening to music, but it's also like moving.

Speaker 4:

Well, on that note, maybe shout out to the trampolinas there you go, Get those. Drain that lymphatic system there. You know, that's interesting.

Speaker 2:

Tito, give me some tissue. Man, somebody's got to teach these kids. There's no such thing as a free trip to Hawaii. Yeah.

Speaker 3:

Well, yeah, there was some. There were some problems. The media started something for sure.

Speaker 4:

That's right, he's innocent. Come on, nicole. He says he's innocent, yeah.

Speaker 3:

He was a All his comedians making fun of him A scheme just to Look over here.

Speaker 4:

Yeah, michael.

Speaker 2:

Jackson's doing something.

Speaker 3:

I thought he was just friends with so many kids. Corey Feldman, he's in her child. Yeah, yeah, he was childlike.

Speaker 2:

I'm just on the whole, in case I get the fries during the night. What's your favorite? Vegetable I don't know Steak.

Speaker 3:

No, the carrots, Carrot, okay carrots.

Speaker 4:

They're good for you.

Speaker 2:

Raw and cooked.

Speaker 4:

Oh funky, that was funny. I love this, yeah, who?

Speaker 3:

does guitar in this one. Is this Luca there? It seems like it could be, but you talking to me. Who the fuck are you? Thank you at all. It's David Williams.

Speaker 1:

I'm not a fan of him. I'm not a fan of him. I'm not a fan of him.

Speaker 3:

I'm not a fan of him. I think it's David Williams.

Speaker 4:

That's good repetitive.

Speaker 3:

Yeah.

Speaker 4:

It's bold. You know, repetition is a form of creation. Okay, sure, briny, no said that.

Speaker 3:

Well, it's kind of got a repetitive percussion in the background.

Speaker 4:

What is that? Is that the LM1 drum machine? I think, okay, there's a. I was reading some tech jargon. There's also a synth clavver.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, I've heard of that. I don't know what it is Greg Philanges Philange Philange, greg Philange Philange.

Speaker 2:

He would have an enormous swanstuker.

Speaker 4:

He's going to be very popular. Jackson got sued for the mama say. Mama say oh yeah. Masakusa Sugg.

Speaker 3:

Speaker 4:

Speaker 1:

Speaker 3:

Speaker 4:

Speaker 3:

Yeah, this is a. It's kind of a song you play when the date is going well, you know, you know it's the pressure of the night is off.

Speaker 1:

Oh now feel, feel naughty, feel naughty.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, both of you are feeling naughty, so Really isn't naughty yeah this is what you put on like 1982.

Speaker 2:

It's like oh yeah, All right.

Speaker 4:

This is where you're going in. Both of you go, yeah.

Speaker 1:

I thought I saw a booty cow.

Speaker 4:

That's a nice line. You're the future that I desire. Girl, I need to hold you Just colder. Don't say it. You're getting a fight with your girlfriend. You're just basically like trying to get back together and you're like just quoting baby, be mine by Michael Jackson and it works. Yeah, and you know what happens after the fight. The makeup, yeah. Oh, I can just see Michael in the studio just spelling these numbers out. It's nice little. It's a little zippered jean jackets, exactly. Shout out to the mountain climbers out there.

Speaker 3:

Get fillin' James is doing a little keyboard action on this too. That temperate is doing a lot of synthesizer. David Williams has a little guitar here, as well as Larry Williams. Oh, no, synthesizer on track. One Last one. Whoa Key change, yeah Was that a mixing thing, or is that on purpose?

Speaker 3:

Yeah, it's all innocent, you know she's mine.

Speaker 1:

I mean, if you have a problem with that, maybe you could just stand outside and figure it out.

Speaker 4:

Thank you, ben Affleck. Yeah, oh, boys, we could smile. It's elementary, you did that pretty good, oh men's smile.

Speaker 3:

We're not gonna like that Okay.

Speaker 2:

Speaker 1:

I've heard it all before Michael. She told me that I'm her forever lover. You know, don't you remember?

Speaker 2:

Well, at the love in me. She said she couldn't love another. Is that what she said? Yeah, she said it. You keep dreaming.

Speaker 4:

I don't believe it, guys, guys, there's a reason to fight.

Take it back. Take it back. You take that back. Alright, alright, take it back.

Speaker 2:

He's gonna want to look at your butthole or something.

Speaker 3:

Oh, that's a Tim. I'm not gonna, I don't, I don't want to look at your buttholes, okay.

Speaker 1:

Do you talk into me?

Speaker 4:

Oh, here's Lukather, this is.

Speaker 2:

If you have a problem with that, you can just sit outside and figure it out.

Speaker 4:

It's fat sound. It is Pretty good.

Speaker 3:

Lewis Johnson on bass Not bad.

Speaker 4:

This song is pure filth. You can't get tired of this song. I feel like people don't get tired of this song.

Speaker 3:

I like it. It's timeless.

Speaker 4:

In the club. Honestly, it's just like song two on track.

Speaker 3:

Track two on side two, I mean Hutchinson, the defensive end for the Lions. He does this whole shtick to this song.

Speaker 4:

It does have Jackson 5 sort of vibe to it. He's throwing back but he's adding a bunch of really fat sounds and obviously everybody wants to work with him.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, it transcends all six generations that are alive right now.

Speaker 4:

Based on groupies, backstage people potentially.

Speaker 3:

So here we're getting now into the ballads, kind of poetic, you know.

Speaker 2:

Tito give me some tissues. Jermaine, stop teasing.

Speaker 5:

Me out.

Speaker 4:

Shout out to the Apple Blighters out there, fruit consumers and the fruit workers, the fruit growers.

Speaker 3:

Shout out to Nancy Kerrigan Thank you for being a sport.

Speaker 4:

That was a sneaky sound effect you got in here. I didn't even know you did that one. That was good, that's important. See that girl. That was a huge story back in the day. That was one of the first, like sports stories that I remember.

Speaker 2:

Why? Why Does he do it that way? I'm like living this way.

Speaker 3:

Wow, you're getting all creative and artsy. Maybe you'll do like a here's Johnny and kind of faded in.

Speaker 4:

That's good. Kind of get him in a little bit.

Speaker 2:

We need his heart pills.

Speaker 5:

Way up here.

Speaker 3:

You're like fade in.

Speaker 4:

Here's Johnny with the S Rollin the hay here. I think it's a roll in the hay.

Speaker 3:

How so? It's good you like to have a roll in the hay.

Speaker 4:

Yeah, why? Why? Nancy's on background vocals? Why?

Speaker 1:

Why.

Speaker 4:

Michael Boddiker on the EMU emulator, a series of digital sample synthesizers using floppy disk storage. That's what Shout out to those floppy disk users out there.

Speaker 3:

Shout out to the floppy disk God, rest your soul. You're in a graveyard of.

Speaker 4:

Not as popular as the large funshtukens.

Speaker 3:

Yeah.

Speaker 4:

AKA the CD-ROM.

Speaker 1:

Why.

Speaker 4:

Why Micro micro processor chips?

Speaker 2:

You talking to me.

Speaker 4:

Tenderoni Shout out to Chromio how is? O is the perfect time he's gonna want to look at your butthole or something Wonderful music did some other things too. Shout out to the tea drinkers with honey in it, I did coffee and tea today.

Speaker 3:

I like the green ice tea.

Speaker 4:

That's into the air baby.

Speaker 2:

I'm doing business.

Speaker 4:

Take it there. You hear that little modulation synth that's like a bend. There's like a bend thing.

Speaker 3:

What about Moog?

Speaker 5:

How do you know it's fine? I mean, we only did it once.

Speaker 2:

I haven't done it with anybody else. I know it's yours.

Speaker 3:

I think even David Page is doing a little synth on here.

Speaker 4:

Just like 7th synth engineers.

Speaker 3:

That was on.

Speaker 4:

Thriller. We got some chipmunks on here in the studio.

Speaker 3:

We got Alvin.

Speaker 4:

Theodore, the other one.

Speaker 3:

Simon Theodore Optimus Prime.

Speaker 5:

Give it some air, man.

Speaker 4:

Play with it. Take it out and play with the synth. It's a pretty young synth, gotta play with it. We're on to the last song here. Time flies.

Speaker 3:

You're just like a non-hit. Probably one of the best songs on the album. I like this one.

Speaker 1:

Old.

Speaker 4:

Tempered in Jones.

Speaker 3:

Sometimes less is more, so true, gary Grant on the Flugelhorn Shout out to Gary.

Speaker 2:

Shout out to the Flugelhorn players.

Speaker 3:

Shout out to Fender Boats. Another synthesizer programming engineer.

Speaker 4:

Exponential love Increased.

Speaker 3:

Actually there could be a criticism on this album. I would say too many synth engineers. They really didn't need like 9 people to do any different synth parts Even in that day.

Speaker 4:

Too many synths in the soup.

Speaker 3:

Spoiled the song. Too many synth players in the kitchen.

Speaker 4:

They had to fit them in the kitchen.

Speaker 3:

The studio's kitchen.

Speaker 4:

Can we go back to a line here?

Speaker 3:

Yeah, Show you how to split a peel.

Speaker 4:

Shout out to the responsible ravers out there.

Speaker 3:

When you take ecstasy, take it responsibly. Is there a way to take it responsibly?

Speaker 4:

Is there even ecstasy? I don't even know, it's like a lude. It doesn't exist anymore.

Speaker 3:

Okay, I don't know.

Speaker 4:

Just bath salts and chamomile for me. Bath salts in water for a tub, soaking it, not taking it.

Speaker 3:

We don't condone irresponsible drug use. We pass on grass.

Speaker 4:

Nancy Kerrigan. Michael got to meet the president for this. He had a crazy ass outfit on.

Speaker 3:

The jacket with the zippers. It was the best, captain Crunchin shit Something like that.

Speaker 4:

It's hilarious.

Speaker 3:

It was like he had taken it down. He takes it down even lower.

Speaker 4:

That is good.

Speaker 3:

This is, like always, the last song of the night, the last call for alcohol.

Speaker 4:

Hopefully you're leaving with a lady 99%? You're not. You just got to wait for that 1%.

Speaker 3:

It's at 130. It's the last call. It's like 99%, not Prince Charming, it's all we're saying.

Speaker 4:

Shout out to non possessive love dynamics.

Speaker 3:

You got to respect that. There we go, sure. So what do we think about it? We're going to go top 3. There's no non hits on this. They're all hits. So what are the top 3? How much thought have you given this here?

Speaker 4:

Top 3. It's going to be top 3. Top 3 in my top 3 is going to be starting something I really do like the song could have been my number 1.

Speaker 3:

Just because it's sort of like ambiguous too.

Speaker 4:

If you don't listen to the lyrics as much, then it's like starting something fun, like starting a party, or it can be vaguely Like starting beef.

Speaker 3:

You start a beef at the party. I think it's also good advice If you're in a party and want to be starting something and then all of a sudden, if you start yelling out, mama say mama s s a kusa. Mama say mama s s a kusa. I'd kind of freak out. I would be second guessing whether I want to be in this fight. For that reason, I accept that as your number 3.

Speaker 4:

What's your number 3?

Speaker 3:

Mine is going to be. I'm going to go with one of those two songs that are we're not part of the seven, that we're all top tens should be in here somewhere. So I'm going to say the lady in my life, there it is, because there isn't, you can make a case that it's a better song than Billie Jean in my opinion, or a pretty young thing for sure there. So, yeah, it takes it down. It's a slow song, it sounds authentic, it sounds like a good. He's not faking the sensual aspect of that song. It comes off as very authentic and so that's why it's my number three.

Speaker 4:

Okay.

Speaker 3:

So your number two.

Speaker 4:

My number two. Oh, you know I'd be lying if I went with. You know I do like the lady in my life, PYT, love it. But number two, Thriller. It's got to be Thriller. Come on, it's amazing song Beat. It could have been there, I don't know, depending on the day. It's just such a good song. I you know everybody's playing it today on Halloween. Sure, what's up?

Speaker 3:

I'm going to say beat. It's my number two song.

Speaker 4:

Nice.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, because it just rocks. It's got that cool guitar, it's got a great beat to it, his lyric, I mean his voice over. How can it not be an incredible song with Michael Jackson's voice over? Even Lukather does a great job, you know, keeping the rhythm down while Eddie Van Halen does that song.

Speaker 4:

So yeah, it's my number two. The West Side Story vibes to it, that's right, all right. Yeah, my number one it's Billy Jean. I mean, what a, what a, what a banger. It's a banger in the queue. Hell yeah, it's such an obvious banger. But it's also like just it just slaps and hits in a nonviolent way.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, it's just this kind of like in the heavy metal world. It would sort of be, you know, like like those those famous intros of ACDC, like right House Bells or like yeah, or even you shook me all night long or it's catchy yeah. Like or what's. That's the one. Yeah, but you get the idea. Oh yeah, I get it. But that intro to Billy Jean is there, yeah, but having said that, I mean that's the obvious choice as a number one.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, it's no, it's no coincidence that it's, you know, listen to three times over versus any other song on here. But in my opinion, the best song on here is Thriller. Hell yeah, because there's there's horns, there's you know, it's like there's disco, there's soul, there's the horror, there's Vincent Price, there's all kinds of stuff going on, incredible video. And it changed the world for sure. It changed MTV and it changed music. I think that song changed music more than any other. Wow. So Thriller has.

Speaker 4:

Yeah.

Speaker 3:

Because it had so much in it, so Okay. But you know, hey, Billy Jean, you know it was right there for me as well. So, anyway, it puts a bow on it, you know. Any last thoughts.

Speaker 4:

It puts a jerry curl on it Just Right, and it and it and on it. And it's spooky, some howling, you know Ow, ow, all right.

Speaker 3:

All right, Thanks for listening. Guys Take care.
